Cody Dalton Eyre
02/08/1997 - 12/24/2017

On Christmas Eve 2017, in Fairbanks, Alaska, Cody Eyre was having a mental health emergency and was suffering from suicidal ideation. As a hunter and outdoor enthusiast, walking in nature had always been a positive coping mechanism for him. He decided to go on a walk, leaving his family home on foot in below-freezing weather. His mother was worried for his safety and decided to call 911 to ask for help from someone trained in mental health crisis management. Instead, a SWAT team responded and, during Cody’s walk, separated him from his mother. Police and troopers shot at him over 40 times in a wooded area. He passed away from a shot to the back of his head by an AR-15 rifle in a trauma room with his family at his side. He was only 20 years old. It has been six years since his death: six years of waiting for justice. His family is in a lawsuit with the City of Fairbanks, Alaska and has been working on going to trial for six years despite strong opposition. Samantha is highly motivated to continue walking with Cody in pursuit of justice for him and others who have been wrongfully killed.
